Quick answers
- How long must my passport be valid for Umrah?
- At least six months beyond your arrival date in Saudi Arabia, with two blank pages for entry, according to the U.S. State Department.
- How do I count six months?
- From the day you arrive in Saudi Arabia, not the day you leave the U.S. or the day you apply. If arrival is March 10, the passport must be valid past September 10.
- Which documents should I carry for Umrah?
- Passport, visa, Nusuk permit, vaccination record, flight and hotel confirmations, insurance details, and for children and single parents, birth certificates and custody or consent documents.
For Umrah, your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date you arrive in Saudi Arabia and have two blank pages for entry, according to the U.S. State Department. Check every passport in your group, including children’s, before you book anything. If one falls short, renew it first, because a Saudi visa is tied to the passport you apply with.
Requirements vary by nationality, visa type and the rules in force when you apply, and they change often. This guide is general information checked against official sources on October 21, 2026, not legal or immigration advice. Visa decisions are made solely by the Saudi authorities, and no agency, including ours, can guarantee approval.

How to check the six-month rule
- Find your planned arrival date in Saudi Arabia. Remember that overnight flights from the U.S. often land the next day.
- Add six months.
- Compare with the expiry date in your passport. It must be later.
- Count the blank visa pages. You need at least two.
| Arrival in Saudi Arabia | Passport must be valid beyond |
|---|---|
| December 22, 2026 | June 22, 2027 |
| February 15, 2027 | August 15, 2027 |
| July 1, 2027 | January 1, 2028 |
Build in a margin. If your flight is delayed by a day or your dates change, a passport that only just passes can suddenly fail.
Renewing a U.S. passport
Renew if your passport fails the six-month rule, is short of blank pages, is damaged, or no longer reflects your name. Processing times vary through the year and are posted on the State Department passport page, which also explains expedited service and when you must apply in person. Renew before applying for a Saudi visa, since the visa is linked to the passport number.
Children’s passports
U.S. passports issued to children under 16 are valid for only five years and must be applied for in person with both parents’ consent, so they are often the ones that catch families out. Check them first.
If you discover a problem late
If you find an expiring or damaged passport close to departure, check the State Department passport page for expedited service and for urgent in-person appointments for imminent international travel, which have their own eligibility rules. Do not apply for a Saudi visa on a passport you are about to replace. If the timing no longer works, it is usually better to move the trip than to risk being refused boarding.
Damaged passports
Water damage, torn pages, a loose cover or a damaged photo page can make a passport invalid for travel even if it has not expired. If yours is in poor condition, replace it before applying for your visa.
Babies and newborns
Every traveler needs a passport, including a newborn. A baby’s first passport is applied for in person with the birth certificate and both parents’ consent, and it needs its own Saudi visa. If you are planning Umrah soon after a birth, allow for passport processing before you book.
Names must match
Your visa application, airline ticket and hotel bookings should use your name exactly as it appears in your passport. Watch for:
- Middle names that are in the passport but left off a booking.
- Married names used on tickets when the passport still shows a maiden name, or the reverse.
- Different spellings of transliterated names across family members’ documents.
The complete document checklist
Every traveler
- Passport valid six months beyond arrival, two blank pages
- Saudi visa (printed and on your phone)
- Umrah permit in the Nusuk app, and any Rawdah appointment
- Vaccination record, including the meningococcal vaccine the State Department lists as required for Umrah travelers
- Return flight confirmation
- Hotel confirmations for Makkah and Madinah
- Travel insurance policy number and emergency phone line
- Prescriptions for any medications, in original packaging
Green card holders
- Valid green card, and a reentry permit if you have one. See the USCIS travel guidance and our overview of Saudi visa options.
Families with children
- Copy of each child’s birth certificate or other proof of relationship (State Department advice)
- For a single parent: marriage, divorce or custody documents as relevant
- A signed consent letter from the other parent if they are not traveling
Originals, copies and digital backups
- Keep originals in a zipped pouch in your carry-on, never in checked bags.
- Keep a printed copy of each passport photo page and visa in a different bag.
- Store digital copies in a secure, password-protected place you can reach from your phone.
- Leave a copy with someone at home.
If a U.S. passport is lost or stolen abroad, contact the U.S. Embassy or a consulate in Saudi Arabia. A copy of the photo page speeds up a replacement.
Hypothetical examples
A family from Columbus, Ohio plans to arrive on December 22. The father’s passport expires in May, so it fails by a month; he renews in August. A woman from Sacramento booked her ticket in her married name, but her passport still shows her maiden name; she corrects the booking before applying for her visa. A father from Atlanta traveling with his daughter carries her birth certificate and her mother’s consent letter.

Frequently asked questions
Does my passport need blank pages for Saudi Arabia?
Yes. The State Department says two blank pages are required for entry. Visa pages at the back of the passport count; endorsement pages do not.
Do I need a photo for the Saudi visa application?
Yes. The online application asks for a recent photo that meets its specification. A standard U.S. passport-style photo taken against a plain white background usually works.
Should I carry paper copies of my travel documents?
Yes. Phones run out of battery and signal can be weak in crowds. Carry printed copies of your visa, hotel confirmations and return flight, kept separately from your passport.
My name is spelled differently on my ticket and passport. Is that a problem?
It can be. Airlines and immigration officers expect an exact match. Correct the booking with the airline or your agency before you travel, and make sure the visa matches the passport.
What documents should I prepare?
Each traveler needs a valid passport, the issued visa, a Nusuk Umrah permit for their date, flight tickets, hotel and transfer confirmations, a meningococcal vaccination certificate and insurance details. Green card holders should carry the card, and a child traveling with one parent should carry a consent letter. Keep paper copies apart from the originals. Our packing checklist includes a documents list.
How long must my passport be valid for Umrah?
Plan on at least six months of validity beyond your arrival date in Saudi Arabia, with blank pages, for every traveler including babies. If a passport expires within the next year, renew it before you apply for the visa, because the visa is linked to the passport number. U.S. passport processing times are posted on the State Department passport pages. Our guide to passport validity and documents has a checklist.
What vaccinations are required for Umrah?
A meningococcal ACWY vaccination is required, given at least 10 days before arrival; the Saudi Ministry of Health’s pilgrim health page counts a conjugate vaccine as valid for five years and a polysaccharide vaccine for three. For the 1447H season, COVID-19 vaccination was also required for higher-risk travelers, such as people over 65, pregnant women and those with chronic conditions, and a seasonal flu shot is recommended. Ask your doctor or a travel clinic and check the CDC’s Saudi Arabia traveler page.
I am a dual citizen. Which passport should I use?
Use the same passport for the Saudi visa, your flights and Nusuk, because the details must match at every step. Many dual nationals use their U.S. passport for the eVisa; leave and re-enter the United States on your U.S. passport. Check the exit and entry rules of your other country too, and tell us which passport each traveler will use.
Does a child traveling with one parent need a consent letter?
Carry one. A signed letter of consent from the other parent, with a copy of their ID, and the child’s birth certificate can avoid questions from airlines and immigration, and some airlines ask for it. Check the current Saudi visa conditions for minors and your airline’s rules before you travel. A notarized letter is the safest choice.
What if the name on my ticket does not match my passport?
Tell your specialist before the ticket is issued, or straight away if it already has been. Names on tickets, visas and Nusuk must match the passport’s machine-readable line, and even a missing middle name or reversed order can cause problems at check-in. Correcting a ticket may involve an airline fee, so send a clear copy of each passport’s photo page through the secure channel your specialist provides.
