Quick answers
- What is the fastest way from Makkah to Madinah?
- Usually the Haramain high-speed train, which published figures put at about 2 hours 45 minutes between the two stations. Add time for the car to and from each station.
- How long is the drive from Makkah to Madinah?
- Most of a day once you include check-out, rest stops and check-in. The road journey itself typically takes several hours, longer by coach.
- Which option is best for elderly parents?
- Often a private car, because it goes door to door with no stations, stairs or luggage handling. The train is faster but involves two extra transfers.
- Do I need Ihram from Madinah to Makkah?
- If you are going to Makkah to perform Umrah, yes. In mainstream practice you enter Ihram at or before the Madinah miqat, Dhul Hulayfah.
Almost every Umrah trip from the United States includes one journey between Makkah and Madinah. There are three ways to make it: the Haramain high-speed train, a coach or a private car. Each works; the right one depends on who is traveling, how much luggage you have and how much the extra transfers matter.
Travel conditions, checked October 21, 2026: the U.S. State Department rates Saudi Arabia Level 3, “Reconsider travel” (advisory issued October 12, 2026). It cites drone and missile threats, terrorism and other risks, and notes that commercial flights have at times been significantly disrupted. Read the current advisory before you book and again before you leave, enroll in STEP, prefer fares you can change, and look for travel insurance that covers disruption and medical evacuation.

The Haramain train
The railway links Makkah, Jeddah (city and airport stations), King Abdullah Economic City and Madinah. It is usually the fastest option, and the ride is smooth and air-conditioned. The stations are not next to the holy mosques, so you need a car between each station and your hotel, and you carry bags through the station yourself. Read the practical details in The Haramain Train for Umrah.
By coach
Coaches are the standard for many group packages. They pick up from the hotel, take luggage in the hold and usually stop for prayers and rest. The journey takes longer than the train, and the departure time is set for the whole group, but you never handle bags at a station.
By private car
A private car or van for your party is the most flexible choice. It leaves when you are ready, can stop at the miqat mosque at Dhul Hulayfah, and takes you from hotel door to hotel door. It costs more than a coach seat, and you spend longer on the road than on the train, but for families and older travelers the lack of extra transfers often matters most. It is a common feature of private packages.
Ihram when traveling from Madinah to Makkah
If you travel from Madinah to Makkah to perform Umrah, you enter Ihram at or before the Madinah miqat. By road, many pilgrims stop at the miqat mosque at Dhul Hulayfah (Abyar Ali). By train, which does not stop there, pilgrims usually change at the hotel or the miqat mosque before going to the station and make the intention before the train passes the miqat. See Ihram Explained and ask a scholar if unsure.
Examples
- Two adults from Boston with carry-on and one bag each: the train saves time; a car at each end completes the trip
- A Dallas family with a toddler and grandparents: a private van, leaving after breakfast, with a stop at the miqat
- A masjid group from Detroit: a coach, with group luggage handled and a single departure time
- A San Francisco traveler on a budget: train or coach depending on the luggage and timetable
Timing your travel day
- Leave after a prayer, not just before one: traffic near the Haram eases once the crowds have settled
- Fridays: plan the journey around the Friday prayer rather than across it
- Arrive before dark if you can: checking in and finding the mosque is easier in daylight, especially the first time
- Summer: avoid long waits outdoors in the midday heat at stations or rest stops
- Check-out times: ask the hotel about late check-out or luggage storage if your train or car leaves later
From Makkah to Madinah
Traveling the other way, after you have completed Umrah, you do not need Ihram for the journey to Madinah. Many pilgrims perform a farewell Tawaf before leaving Makkah; scholars differ on whether it is required after Umrah, so ask a scholar you trust. Leave enough time for it before your pickup or train.
Travel-day checklist
- Confirm check-out time and the pickup or train time in writing
- Keep medicines, documents, chargers and Ihram in a small bag you carry yourself
- Eat before you leave and carry water
- If going to Makkah for Umrah, plan where you will enter Ihram
- Allow time for check-in on arrival before planning the mosque
- Leave ziyarat for another day

Frequently asked questions
Can we stop at the miqat on the train?
The train does not stop at Dhul Hulayfah. Pilgrims usually put on Ihram in Madinah, often after praying at the miqat mosque or at the hotel, and make the intention before the train passes the miqat. A road transfer can stop at the miqat mosque itself. See The Haramain Train for Umrah.
Is a coach included in group packages?
Often, yes. Group packages commonly use a coach between the cities, with stops along the way. Your package page and quote state exactly what is included.
Can we do ziyarat on the travel day?
A private car can sometimes combine a short stop with the journey, but we recommend keeping travel days light, especially with children or older relatives.
Can a wheelchair travel on each option?
A folding wheelchair can usually travel in a private car or coach. For the train, ask about assistance and space when booking. Assistance is requested on your behalf, subject to availability, and is never guaranteed until confirmed.
How will I travel between Makkah and Madinah?
By road or by the Haramain high-speed train. The cities are about 450 km apart: a car or van takes roughly four and a half to six hours with a rest stop, door to door, while the train runs between dedicated stations in a little over two hours on direct services, plus the ride to and from each station. Your quote states which one is included. Compare them in Makkah to Madinah transport.
