Quick answers

Which stations does the Haramain train serve?
Five: Makkah (Al-Rusaifah), Jeddah (Al-Sulaimaniyah), King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, King Abdullah Economic City near Rabigh, and Madinah.
How long does the train take from Makkah to Madinah?
About 2 hours 45 minutes according to published figures, and about 2 hours from Jeddah airport to Madinah. Times vary by service and number of stops.
Is the train station near the Haram?
No. Both the Makkah and Madinah stations are a drive from the holy mosques, so plan a car or taxi at each end.
How do I book the Haramain train?
Tickets are sold through the official Haramain railway website and app and at stations. If your package includes the train, we request seats on your behalf, subject to availability.

The Haramain high-speed railway has changed how pilgrims move between the holy cities. A trip that once took most of a day by road now takes about 2 hours 45 minutes station to station between Makkah and Madinah, according to published figures. It is not the right choice for everyone, but used well it saves time and energy.

Travel conditions, checked October 21, 2026: the U.S. State Department rates Saudi Arabia Level 3, “Reconsider travel” (advisory issued October 12, 2026). It cites drone and missile threats, terrorism and other risks, and notes that commercial flights have at times been significantly disrupted. Read the current advisory before you book and again before you leave, enroll in STEP, prefer fares you can change, and look for travel insurance that covers disruption and medical evacuation.

Published figures give about 2 hours 45 minutes from Makkah to Madinah and about 2 hours from Jeddah airport to Madinah, on a line of roughly 450 km with top speeds of up to 300 km/h. Individual services vary, so check the timetable for your date on the official Haramain site.

Booking basics

  • Tickets are sold through the official website and app and at stations
  • Each passenger needs their own ticket; have passport details ready
  • Popular times sell out in busy seasons such as Ramadan and school holidays
  • Read the fare rules for changes and refunds before you pay
  • If your package includes the train, we request seats for you on request, subject to availability, and confirm only once tickets are issued

Luggage

Luggage rules on the train are stricter than in a car or coach, and you move your own bags through the station and onto the train. Check the current allowance on the official site before you pack. Practical tips:

  • One medium suitcase and one small bag per person is far easier than several large cases
  • Families with lots of luggage sometimes send the big bags by road with a driver and take the train with day bags; ask us whether this can be arranged for your trip
  • Keep medicines, documents and Ihram in the bag you carry

On the day

  1. Arrange a car from your hotel to the station, leaving extra time around prayer times when roads near the Haram are busy
  2. Arrive early enough to find your platform calmly
  3. Have your ticket on your phone and printed if you can
  4. On arrival, take a pre-arranged car or a taxi to your hotel; save the hotel address in Arabic and English

Ihram on the Madinah to Makkah train

The train passes the Madinah miqat, Dhul Hulayfah, without stopping. In mainstream practice, pilgrims heading to Makkah for Umrah put on Ihram before boarding, many after praying at the miqat mosque or at their hotel, and make the intention before the train passes the miqat. Some listen for an announcement; do not rely on one. See Ihram Explained.

Getting to and from the stations

Neither the Makkah nor the Madinah station is beside the holy mosque, and this is the part of a train journey people most often underestimate. In Makkah, roads near the Haram are slowest in the hour before each prayer and some central streets restrict vehicles, so a car to the station can take much longer than the distance suggests. In Madinah, the drive from the central area is usually simpler. Taxis and ride-hailing cars wait at stations, but after a long day a pre-arranged car is easier, especially with children or older relatives.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the hotel too late: allow for traffic around prayer times and the walk through the station
  • Too much luggage: large cases slow you down on platforms and in the carriage
  • Confusing the Jeddah stations: the airport station and the Sulaimaniyah city station are different stops; check which one your ticket names
  • Forgetting Ihram: if you are going to Makkah for Umrah, enter Ihram before boarding in Madinah
  • No plan at the far end: know how you will reach your hotel before the train arrives

Sample train days

  • Madinah-first family from Atlanta: land in Jeddah in the afternoon after one connection, take the train from the airport station to Madinah and a car to the hotel; four nights later, put on Ihram at the hotel, pray at the miqat mosque on the way to the station and continue to Makkah
  • Couple from New York, Makkah first: after four nights in Makkah, a late-morning car to the station, the train to Madinah and check-in before Maghrib
  • Good fit: fit adults, couples, light packers, anyone short on time
  • Think twice: older travelers who find stations tiring, families with lots of luggage, anyone needing a stop at the miqat mosque

For older relatives, a private car door to door is often kinder. Compare all three options in Makkah to Madinah Transport, and save the railway app alongside your other tools from Umrah Phone, SIM and Apps. For airport legs, see Umrah Airport Transfers.

Notes on Ihram and the miqat describe mainstream practice only, not a religious ruling. If your route is unusual, ask a qualified scholar you trust.

Frequently asked questions

Can I travel in Ihram on the train?

Yes. Many pilgrims traveling from Madinah to Makkah board the train already in Ihram clothing. The train does not stop at the Madinah miqat, so in mainstream practice you make the intention before it passes Dhul Hulayfah. Ask a scholar if you are unsure.

Can I take the train straight from Jeddah airport?

Yes, the line has a station at King Abdulaziz International Airport. Depending on your terminal and arrival time, a car may still be simpler after a long flight, especially with family and luggage.

Are there different classes?

The railway has offered more than one class of travel. Check the current classes, what each includes and the fare on the official site when you book.

What if the train is full or cancelled?

Seats can sell out at busy times, and services can change. We plan a road alternative for any train leg we arrange, so you are not stranded. Nothing is confirmed until tickets are issued.

Can children travel on the train?

Yes. Check the official site for the current child and infant fare rules. Keep strollers folded and luggage manageable for boarding.

How will I travel between Makkah and Madinah?

By road or by the Haramain high-speed train. The cities are about 450 km apart: a car or van takes roughly four and a half to six hours with a rest stop, door to door, while the train runs between dedicated stations in a little over two hours on direct services, plus the ride to and from each station. Your quote states which one is included. Compare them in Makkah to Madinah transport.

Can I request the Haramain train?

Yes, on request, subject to seats on your date. The train links Makkah, Jeddah, King Abdulaziz International Airport, King Abdullah Economic City and Madinah, in economy or business class. Each passenger may take one large bag and one small personal item, and the Makkah station is a few kilometers from the Haram, so a car is still needed at each end. Schedules and fares are on the official Haramain railway site; read the Haramain train for Umrah.
