Quick answers

How do I get from Jeddah airport to Makkah?
By pre-arranged private car, a shared coach on group trips, or the Haramain train from the airport station to Makkah followed by a car to your hotel. The road journey usually takes around an hour or more.
Are airport transfers included in Umrah packages?
Often, but not always. Your package and quote list transfers as included or excluded; if a transfer is not listed as included, assume it is not.
What if my flight is delayed?
Pre-arranged transfers are normally matched to your flight number. Tell us about any change as soon as you know, and keep the emergency contact number in your quote handy.

The transfer from the airport is the last stretch of a very long journey, and it often happens at night. A clear plan, made before you fly, means you walk out of the terminal knowing exactly where to go. This guide covers arrivals in Jeddah and Madinah and the three ways to reach your hotel.

Travel conditions, checked October 21, 2026: the U.S. State Department rates Saudi Arabia Level 3, “Reconsider travel” (advisory issued October 12, 2026). It cites drone and missile threats, terrorism and other risks, and notes that commercial flights have at times been significantly disrupted. Read the current advisory before you book and again before you leave, enroll in STEP, prefer fares you can change, and look for travel insurance that covers disruption and medical evacuation.

What happens after landing

  1. Immigration: passport and visa checks; queues vary with the number of flights landing
  2. Baggage reclaim: collect your bags and check nothing is damaged
  3. Customs and exit to the arrivals hall
  4. Meet your transfer: your driver or group representative, the coach area, or the walk to the train station

Turn on your phone or eSIM before leaving the arrivals hall so you can reach your driver. See Umrah Phone, SIM and Apps.

Arriving in Jeddah

Jeddah is the main gateway for Umrah. By road, Makkah is usually around an hour or more away, depending on traffic, your terminal and how close your hotel is to the Haram. Roads near the Haram are busiest around prayer times, and some central streets have vehicle restrictions, so the last few minutes can be slow. If you are in Ihram and going straight to Makkah, many pilgrims rest at the hotel before Umrah; that is perfectly acceptable.

If you are heading to Madinah first from Jeddah, a train from the airport station or a long road transfer are both possible. After an overnight flight from the U.S., many families prefer to rest a night in Makkah or go by car.

Arriving in Madinah

Madinah’s airport is much closer to the city center, and the drive to hotels near the Prophet’s Mosque is usually short outside peak times. Madinah arrivals suit a gentle start; see Jeddah vs Madinah for the full comparison.

Examples

  • Midnight arrival from New York, family of five: private van to Makkah, rest until after Fajr, Umrah later that morning
  • Group arrival from Houston: coach to Makkah with the group representative
  • Couple from Seattle, afternoon arrival, light bags: train from Jeddah airport to Makkah, short taxi to the hotel
  • Grandparents from Atlanta landing in Madinah: private car with wheelchair space requested in advance

Arriving in Ihram

If you entered Ihram on the flight, the restrictions continue through the airport and the transfer. Keep the journey simple: go straight to the hotel, check in, eat and rest. There is no need to rush to the mosque in the middle of the night after a 20-hour journey. Many pilgrims from the U.S. sleep a few hours and perform Umrah after Fajr, when they can walk, think and pray with full attention.

If something goes wrong on arrival

  • Your driver is not there: stay in the arrivals hall, call the number in your quote and message us; do not accept rides from people who approach you
  • A bag is missing: report it at the airline’s desk before you leave the baggage hall and keep the reference
  • Your phone has no service: use airport Wi-Fi to message your driver, or ask an information desk to call
  • The flight landed very late: your transfer should be matched to the flight number, but confirm by message as soon as you land

What to confirm before you fly

  • Whether each transfer is included, and of which type
  • The flight number and arrival time the transfer is matched to
  • Where you meet the driver or group, and a phone number to call
  • Luggage limits for the vehicle
  • Your hotel’s name and address in Arabic and English
  • Who to contact if your flight is delayed or rerouted

Transfers for families and groups

Vehicle size matters more than people expect. A family of five with a stroller and five suitcases will not fit in a standard sedan, and a group of twelve needs a minibus or coach rather than several cars that arrive at different times. Tell us the number of travelers, bags, strollers and wheelchairs when you request a quote, so the vehicle in your quote matches what you are actually bringing.

Leaving for your flight home

Plan the departure transfer generously. Allow for traffic around prayer times, the airport check-in deadline and, on the way home, heavier bags with Zamzam and gifts. For a Jeddah departure from Makkah, most planners leave several hours before the flight. See Umrah Baggage, Connections and Return Flights and the train option in The Haramain Train for Umrah.

This guide is general travel information. Airline schedules, train timetables and airport arrangements change, sometimes at short notice. Nothing here is a booking or a promise: flights, train seats and transfers are arranged on request, subject to availability, and confirmed only in your written quote.

Every quote we prepare lists each transfer clearly. Request a personalized quote or browse private packages with private transfers. Transfers are arranged on request, subject to availability. The bigger picture is in our Umrah flights and transportation guide.

Frequently asked questions

Should I take a taxi instead of a booked transfer?

You can, but after a long flight, a pre-arranged car avoids negotiating and finding the right vehicle with family and luggage. If you do take a taxi or ride-hailing car, use an official rank or app and agree the destination clearly.

Can the driver wait if immigration is slow?

Pre-arranged drivers usually track arrival times and allow for immigration and baggage, but waiting limits vary by supplier. Your quote states the arrangement and who to call.

Can we stop to eat on the way to Makkah?

A private car can usually make a short stop if you ask. In Ihram, remember the restrictions apply from the moment you make the intention.

Do transfers work for wheelchair users?

Tell us in advance. A folding wheelchair usually fits a car or van, and airport assistance can be requested through the airline. Assistance is requested on request, subject to availability, and never guaranteed until confirmed.

Are airport transfers included?

In our packages, airport and intercity transfers are normally included, and your quote states whether each one is private or shared and which airport and hotel it connects. Land-only travelers who arrange their own flights still receive transfers that match their flight times, provided we have the flight details. See Umrah airport transfers.

Are private transfers available?

Yes. Private transfers carry only your party in a car, van or larger vehicle and leave when you are ready, which helps with children, elderly travelers and late arrivals. Shared transfers cost less but may wait for other passengers. Each quote states which kind is included; private transfers can be added on request.

How do transfers work for different flight arrival times?

Each transfer is booked against a specific flight, so the driver is told your flight number and arrival time and can follow delays. If members of your party land at different times, each arrival needs its own transfer, or the early arrivals wait for the later flight. Late-night arrivals are common from the U.S.; hotels need to know if you will check in after midnight. Send any flight change to your coordinator straight away.

What should I check in my transfer confirmation?

Check the date, pickup time and flight number, the pickup point (arrivals hall or a station), the hotel name, the number of passengers and bags, whether it is private or shared, and a local contact number to call if you cannot find the driver. Save it on your phone and keep a printed copy, since mobile data may not work right after landing.

How long does it take to get from Jeddah airport to Makkah?

Plan on about an hour and a half by road, sometimes more with traffic or at peak times, plus the time to clear immigration and collect bags, which can be long when many flights land together. The Haramain train from the airport station is another option, followed by a short drive from Makkah station to your hotel. Ask for a rest stop if you are arriving tired in Ihram.
