Quick answers

How far in advance should I book Umrah?
Three to four months for most of the year; six months or more for Ramadan, the December holidays and summer break, when hotels near the Haram fill early.
Is one month enough to plan Umrah?
It can work for U.S. citizens with valid passports and flexible hotel choices, but options shrink and prices are often higher. It rarely works for peak dates.
What should I do first?
Check that every passport will be valid at least six months beyond your arrival date. If one needs renewing, start that before anything else.

For most of the year, plan Umrah from the USA three to four months in advance. For Ramadan, the December holidays and summer school break, start six months or more ahead. The first thing to check is passports: if one needs renewing, that can add weeks, and you should not apply for visas or book non-refundable travel until it is done.

This is part of our Umrah-from-the-USA planning guide.

Lead times by season

When you travelStart planningWhy
Ramadan, especially the last ten nights6–9 monthsHighest demand; hotels near the Haram may require minimum stays
Late December and New Year5–7 monthsU.S. school break; flights from major hubs fill early
Thanksgiving week4–6 monthsShort break, high airfare demand
Summer (June–August)4–6 monthsSchool holidays, despite the heat
Spring break4–5 monthsPopular with families; check the Hajj-season pause
Other months3–4 monthsGood choice of hotels and flights

These are practical guidelines, not rules. Demand changes year to year, and Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar. See the best time of year for Umrah for how the seasons compare.

Why passports set the clock

The State Department says your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Saudi Arabia. If any passport falls short, or a child’s passport is about to expire, renew it before applying for visas. Processing times change through the year and are posted on the State Department passport page; build them into your plan rather than assuming the fastest service. Our guide to passport validity and documents covers the details.

How visas and permits fit in

  • Tourist eVisa (U.S. citizens): applied for online. The official portal describes it as a one-year, multiple-entry visa, so you can apply once your dates are firm, without waiting until the last minute.
  • Umrah visa: issued with a package bought from an approved provider on Nusuk. Each season has a last date for issuing Umrah visas; for the 1448 AH season the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah set it as March 9, 2027.
  • Umrah permit: booked in the Nusuk app for a specific time slot, usually shortly before travel.

A countdown checklist

Six months or more before

  • Agree on dates with everyone traveling.
  • Check every passport’s expiry date.
  • For peak dates, request quotes now.

Three to four months before

  • Compare quotes and accept one in writing.
  • Request leave from work and school.
  • Decide whether you need wheelchair or other assistance and ask about it.

Two months before

  • See your doctor about vaccinations, including the meningococcal vaccine the State Department lists as required for Umrah travelers.
  • Buy travel insurance.
  • Apply for visas as advised.

Two to four weeks before

  • Set up Nusuk and learn how permits are booked.
  • Break in walking shoes and start packing.
  • Arrange phone data.

The final week

  • Book your Umrah permit and any Rawdah appointment.
  • Reconfirm flights and transfers.
  • Recheck the State Department advisory and enroll in STEP.

If your dates are fixed by an event

A wedding, graduation or work commitment can fix your dates in a way that leaves no flexibility. In that case, book the parts that are hardest to replace first, usually the Makkah hotel and the international flights, as soon as passports and visa routes are confirmed, and accept that the price may be higher than in a flexible window.

Hypothetical examples

A family from Atlanta planning December: they start in June, find one teenager’s passport expires in March and renew it in July. By September they have accepted a quote, and visas are done in October. Nothing is rushed.

A retiree from Phoenix planning a quiet month: with a valid passport and flexible dates, three months is plenty. Booking outside school holidays gives a wider choice of hotels close to the Haram.

When to add extra time

Some trips need more lead time than the table suggests, whatever the season:

  • Groups of eight or more: blocks of rooms near the Haram and seats on the same flights are harder to secure. Add at least two months.
  • Travelers on another visa route: if anyone holds a passport that is not on the Saudi eVisa list, allow time to confirm their route and, for an Umrah visa, to fit the season calendar.
  • Wheelchair users and travelers with medical needs: airline assistance, accessible rooms and suitable transfers are requests until confirmed, and confirmations take time.
  • Green card holders: if a card is close to expiry, renewal comes first, and that can take a while.
  • Families with school-age children: leave time to request absences, and to renew children’s passports, which are valid for only five years.

If any of these apply, start with the passport and visa checks before you look at hotels. Our booking process guide shows what happens at each stage.

Can you plan a last-minute Umrah?

Sometimes. If you hold a valid U.S. passport, can travel in a quieter month and are flexible about hotels and flights, a trip within four to six weeks is often possible. It is much harder for Ramadan, school breaks, groups or anyone who needs a visa through another route. If a date is important, start early; if it is flexible, ask what is available now. Our guide on when Umrah plans change covers what happens if dates move after booking.

Frequently asked questions

Is two months enough time to plan Umrah?

For a U.S. citizen with a valid passport traveling outside peak dates, usually yes. For Ramadan, December or a large family group, two months often means fewer choices and higher prices.

When should I renew a passport that expires soon?

Before you apply for any visa or book non-refundable travel. If it will have less than six months’ validity on your arrival date in Saudi Arabia, renew it now and check current processing times on the State Department passport page.

Do Umrah flights get cheaper if I wait?

Not reliably. Fares for peak dates tend to rise as seats fill, and good hotels near the Haram sell out regardless of airfare. Waiting can pay off occasionally in quiet months, but it is a gamble.

How early can I book an Umrah permit in Nusuk?

Permit availability is set by the Saudi authorities and shown in the Nusuk app; the booking window can vary by season. Most travelers book once their visa is issued and their arrival time is confirmed.

How early should I book Umrah?

Three to four months ahead works for most of the year, and six months or more for Ramadan, December and other school breaks, when hotels near the Haram fill first. Booking early gives you more flight choice, not a guaranteed lower price. Check that every passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates before you request a quote. See how far in advance to plan.

When should I start planning Ramadan travel?

Six to nine months ahead is sensible, and earlier for the last ten nights or a hotel beside the Haram. For Ramadan 2027, which is expected to start around February 8, that means planning in the summer or early fall of 2026. Exact Ramadan dates depend on the moon sighting, so keep a night or two of flexibility at each end, and remember Umrah visas are issued against confirmed bookings.
