Quick answers

What is the best month for Umrah?
There is no single best month. For comfortable weather, December to February; for spiritual reward, Ramadan; for lower prices and calmer mosques, quieter months outside school breaks.
When can’t I perform Umrah?
Saudi authorities pause Umrah for visitors for several weeks before and during Hajj each year and announce the exact dates each season.
Is summer a bad time for Umrah?
Not bad, but very hot: daytime temperatures in Makkah often exceed 105°F. Many families go anyway because of school holidays and plan around the heat.

The best time of year for Umrah from the USA depends on what you value most. December to February offers the mildest weather. Ramadan carries special reward but brings the biggest crowds and highest prices. Summer suits school calendars but is intensely hot. And for several weeks around Hajj, Umrah is paused for visitors. Most families choose by starting with the dates they can travel and then weighing weather, crowds and cost.

This guide is part of our complete guide to Umrah from the USA.

The four things that change through the year

  • Weather: Makkah is warm even in winter and very hot in summer. Madinah is a little cooler at night in winter.
  • Crowds: highest in Ramadan, high in school holidays and on Fridays year-round.
  • Prices: follow demand. Hotels near the Haram price by date, and Ramadan rates are the highest of the year.
  • Rules: the annual Hajj-season pause, and season dates for Umrah visas.

How the year compares

June–AugustVery hotModerate to highSchool holidays; plan worship around the heat

Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar, so check where it falls for your year. In the coming years it falls in late winter, overlapping with milder weather.

The Hajj-season pause

Every year the Saudi authorities stop Umrah for visitors for several weeks before and during Hajj. In 2026, Umrah permit issuance in Nusuk was suspended from April 18 (1 Dhu al-Qi’dah 1447) to May 31, and holders of all visa types except Hajj visas were not allowed to enter or stay in Makkah from April 18, according to the Saudi Press Agency.

For the current 1448 AH season, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah calendar sets these dates for Umrah-visa holders:

  • Last date to issue Umrah visas: March 9, 2027 (1 Shawwal 1448)
  • Last date to enter Saudi Arabia: March 23, 2027 (15 Shawwal 1448)
  • Last date to depart: April 7, 2027 (30 Shawwal 1448)

Dates for tourist-visa holders around Hajj 2027 had not been announced when we checked. If you are thinking about late March or April 2027, plan conservatively and check Nusuk before booking.

Season by season

Winter and the December holidays

The most comfortable weather of the year and the U.S. winter break make late December one of the busiest times for Americans. Book early. Our guide to Thanksgiving and December Umrah covers holiday travel in detail.

Ramadan

Many pilgrims long to spend Ramadan nights in the holy mosques. Expect large crowds, long nights, higher prices and high demand for Nusuk permits. See Ramadan Umrah planning.

Summer

Daytime temperatures in Makkah regularly pass 105°F. If summer is your only window, choose a hotel close to the Haram, perform Umrah after Isha or before Fajr, and rest in the afternoon.

Fall and the quieter months

For travelers without school constraints, early fall and the weeks between holidays often mean calmer mosques and better hotel choice. Thanksgiving week is the exception.

Crowds within the week and the day

Season is not the only thing that changes crowd levels. The Saudi weekend falls on Friday and Saturday, and Friday prayer brings the largest crowds of the week to both holy mosques. Saudi and Gulf school holidays can fill hotels even in months that are quiet for Americans, so a date that looks calm on the U.S. calendar may not be calm in Makkah. Within each day, the mosques are busiest just before and after the prayers, and many pilgrims find Tawaf easier late at night or in the hours after Fajr.

Day length and prayer times

In winter, Fajr comes later and the days are shorter, so the prayers sit closer together and there is less time to rest between them. In summer the day is longer and the heat peaks between Dhuhr and Asr, so many pilgrims rest at the hotel then and spend the evening at the Haram. If you are traveling with children or older relatives, plan your rest around the prayer times for your dates, not around a fixed U.S. routine.

Matching the season to your group

  • Elderly parents: cooler months and a hotel close to the Haram matter most.
  • Young children: school breaks may be the only option; avoid the hottest weeks if you can.
  • First-time pilgrims: a quieter month makes it easier to learn the layout and perform the rites unhurried.
  • Budget-focused travelers: fall and the weeks between U.S. holidays usually offer the best value.

Hypothetical examples

A couple from Seattle with flexible jobs picks mid-November, avoiding Thanksgiving week, for warm but bearable weather and lower demand. A family from Detroit with school-age children chooses late December, accepts the higher price and books six months ahead. A family from Houston can only travel in July; they choose a hotel with a short walk and plan the rites at night.

Frequently asked questions

How hot is Makkah in summer?

Very hot. Daytime highs in June, July and August regularly exceed 105°F and can go well beyond. Shade, water and timing your walks for early morning or night make a real difference.

Is the cheapest time for Umrah also the quietest?

Usually, but not always. Prices follow demand, so quiet months tend to cost less, yet summer can be busy because of school holidays even though it is the hottest season. Fridays are busy all year.

Is Thanksgiving week a good time for Umrah?

It works well for families who cannot take other time off, and the weather is warm but easing. The trade-off is high U.S. airfare demand that week, so book early or consider leaving a few days before.

When does Umrah restart after Hajj?

Shortly after Hajj ends. For the 1448 AH season, Umrah visa issuance began on May 31, 2026 and Umrah permits in Nusuk from June 1, 2026, according to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Dates for the following season are announced each year.

Which months are suitable for Umrah?

Umrah can be performed for most of the year, but the authorities pause it for visitors around Hajj. For the 1448 AH season, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah’s 1448 AH Umrah calendar opened entry on May 31, 2026, sets March 23, 2027 as the last day to enter on an Umrah visa and April 7, 2027 as the last day to leave. Within the season it is a trade-off: winter (roughly December to February) is milder, summer regularly passes 105°F, and Ramadan and school holidays are the most crowded and expensive.

Why do Umrah prices differ by season?

Because demand for the same hotel rooms and flights swings sharply through the year. Ramadan, especially its last ten nights, and U.S. school breaks such as December and spring break bring the most pilgrims, so hotels near the Haram charge more and often require minimum stays. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar, so the expensive weeks shift too. Quieter months, often right after the Umrah season reopens in early summer, can be much better value, though summer is very hot.

What should I consider about crowd levels?

Crowds are heaviest in Ramadan, above all the last ten nights, and around Fridays, school holidays and the main prayer times every day. Expect longer walks to an open entrance, a wait for elevators and slower Tawaf. Performing Umrah late at night or mid-morning, using the upper floors, and keeping a meeting point help. Our guide to planning your Umrah day suggests quieter times.

Can I arrange Umrah during spring break?

Often, yes, but check the season dates first. In 2027, Ramadan runs from about February 8 to early March and the Umrah season for visa holders closes in early April, so a late-March or April spring break may fall near or after the cut-off. The dates are set by the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah each year. Read spring break Umrah and tell us your school’s dates.

What is different about summer Umrah planning?

Heat is the big difference: daytime temperatures in Makkah and Madinah commonly pass 105°F. Schedule the rites after sunset or before sunrise, pick a hotel with the shortest possible walk, and keep the hottest hours for rest indoors. The upside is that early summer, right after the season reopens, is often quieter and better value. See the best time of year for Umrah.

How do I cope with the heat in Makkah and Madinah?

Drink water often (Zamzam is available throughout the mosques), use an umbrella and sunscreen outdoors, rest during the hottest hours and plan walking for night and early morning. The marble courtyards get very hot, so wear socks or sandals where allowed when walking outside. Older travelers and anyone with heart or kidney conditions should talk to their doctor before a summer trip, and stop at the first sign of dizziness.
