Choosing Your Umrah Season and Travel Style

Choose your Umrah season by weighing crowds, cost, weather and the time you can take off, then choose a travel style, group, private or family, and a trip length that fits. This guide maps the year for U.S. travelers and links to a detailed guide for each choice.

Quick answers

When is the best time for Umrah from the USA?
There is no single best time. Ramadan carries special virtue but is the most crowded and expensive; December and other school breaks suit families; quieter months away from holidays usually offer the best value and calmer mosques.
Can I perform Umrah all year?
Most of the year. Saudi authorities pause Umrah for international visitors for several weeks around Hajj and announce the dates each season. For 1448 AH, the last entry date on an Umrah visa is March 23, 2027.
Should I go with a group or privately?
Groups suit first-timers who want structure and company at a lower cost; private trips suit families and anyone who wants their own dates, hotels and pace.
How long should an Umrah trip be?
Seven to ten nights is typical from the U.S. Seven works for fit adults short on time; ten gives families and first-timers room to rest.

Two decisions shape an Umrah trip more than any other: when you go and how you travel. The season decides the crowds, the weather and much of the cost. The travel style decides who you travel with, how much flexibility you have and how the days feel. Here is a map of the year for travelers from the United States, and a guide to each style.

Before you choose dates: as of October 21, 2026, the U.S. State Department rates Saudi Arabia Level 3, “Reconsider travel” (advisory issued October 12, 2026), and reports that commercial flights have at times been significantly disrupted. Read the current advisory before booking and before departure, enroll in STEP, and favor changeable fares and insurance that covers disruption and medical evacuation.

For the 1448 AH season, the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced that Umrah visas are issued from May 31, 2026, with a last issue date of March 9, 2027, a last entry date of March 23, 2027 and a last departure date of April 7, 2027, before the pause for Hajj. Check the official announcement and Nusuk again before you book, because these dates are set by the authorities and can be updated.

Choosing a season

Ramadan

Umrah in Ramadan carries special virtue, and the nights of prayer are unforgettable. It is also the most demanding and expensive time to travel. Read Planning Umrah in Ramadan before deciding between the first part of the month and the last ten nights.

Thanksgiving and December

The U.S. holiday calendar makes late November and late December the easiest times for many families to travel together, and the weather in Makkah and Madinah is milder. Demand is high. See Thanksgiving and December Umrah.

Spring break

In 2027, spring break falls just after Ramadan and runs into the end of the Umrah season, so dates need extra care. See Spring Break Umrah.

Quieter months

If you can travel outside holidays, you will usually find calmer mosques, better hotel choice and more flexible flights. Early in the new season and the weeks after the December holidays are often good windows, weather permitting.

Choosing a travel style

StyleWhat it meansBest for
GroupSet dates, shared transfers, a fixed itinerary with other pilgrimsFirst-timers, solo travelers, budget-minded pilgrims
PrivateYour dates, hotels and pace, with transfers for your party onlyCouples, families, anyone wanting flexibility
FamilyA private or small-group trip paced for children and older relativesMulti-generation families
Custom or flexibleA trip designed around unusual dates, stopovers or needsExperienced pilgrims and complex plans

The trade-offs are explained in Private vs Group Umrah, and building in room to adapt is covered in Planning a Flexible Umrah Itinerary.

Choosing a length

From the U.S., seven to ten nights is typical. Long flights and a time difference of 7 to 11 hours mean the first days are rarely at full strength. See 7 vs 10 Nights for sample splits between Makkah and Madinah.

Examples

  • A Brooklyn family with two school-age children: December break, private, ten nights, Madinah first
  • A retired couple in Michigan: January, private, ten nights, closer hotels for shorter walks
  • A university student in Texas: spring break in mid-March, group, seven nights, entering before the season’s last entry date
  • A professional in the Bay Area: the first part of Ramadan, private, seven nights

Weather by season, in brief

  • December to February: the mildest months; pleasant days and cool evenings, noticeably cooler in Madinah at night
  • March and April: warming steadily; comfortable mornings and evenings, warm afternoons
  • Summer: extreme heat, with Makkah regularly above 100°F; Tawaf and Sa’i are easiest at night
  • Autumn: still hot early in the season, easing toward November

Heat matters most for older relatives, young children and anyone with a heart or breathing condition. If summer is your only window, a hotel close to the Haram is worth more than at any other time of year.

A decision checklist

  • Which weeks can everyone in your party take off?
  • Is Ramadan important to you, and can your budget absorb it?
  • How do older relatives or children cope with heat and crowds?
  • Do you want company and structure, or your own pace?
  • Do your dates sit inside the official Umrah season?
  • Can your fares and bookings be changed if conditions change?

This guide is general planning information. Islamic dates depend on the sighting of the moon, school calendars vary by district, and official Umrah rules can change. Nothing here is a booking: flights, hotels and services are arranged on request, subject to availability, and confirmed only in your written quote.

Frequently asked questions

Which months are quietest in Makkah?

Crowds are usually lighter outside Ramadan, school holidays and the weeks just after the Umrah season reopens. Quieter does not mean empty: the Haram is busy at every prayer all year.

Is summer too hot for Umrah?

Summer in Makkah regularly passes 100°F, so many U.S. travelers avoid it, especially with older relatives. If summer is your only option, plan Tawaf and Sa’i for night and early morning, and favor hotels within a short walk.

Can I combine a season with a travel style, like a private Ramadan trip?

Yes. Season and style are separate choices. A private trip in Ramadan, a family trip in December or a group trip at spring break are all possible, subject to availability. Tell us both and we will plan around them.

How far ahead should I book for a holiday season?

Six months or more for Ramadan, Thanksgiving, December and spring break; three to four months for quieter periods.

What if I cannot travel during school holidays at all?

Then you have the advantage: quieter months usually mean calmer mosques, better hotel choice and more flexible flights. A short trip around a long weekend can work for adults.

Why do Umrah prices differ by season?

Because demand for the same hotel rooms and flights swings sharply through the year. Ramadan, especially its last ten nights, and U.S. school breaks such as December and spring break bring the most pilgrims, so hotels near the Haram charge more and often require minimum stays. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar, so the expensive weeks shift too. Quieter months, often right after the Umrah season reopens in early summer, can be much better value, though summer is very hot.

What is different about summer Umrah planning?

Heat is the big difference: daytime temperatures in Makkah and Madinah commonly pass 105°F. Schedule the rites after sunset or before sunrise, pick a hotel with the shortest possible walk, and keep the hottest hours for rest indoors. The upside is that early summer, right after the season reopens, is often quieter and better value. See the best time of year for Umrah.
