Quick answers
- Is 7 nights enough for Umrah?
- Yes, for many pilgrims. Seven nights allows you to perform Umrah, pray in both holy mosques and visit a few sites. It feels tighter once you account for long flights and jet lag, so it suits travelers who are short on time and in good health.
- What is a common 7-night split?
- A common pattern is four nights in Makkah and three in Madinah, or the reverse. Choose based on whether you want more time for Tawaf and prayers in Makkah or a calmer pace in Madinah.
- Should I go to Makkah or Madinah first?
- Both work. Makkah first lets you perform Umrah soon after arriving. Madinah first gives you time to recover from the journey before Umrah, and you enter Ihram on the way to Makkah.
- How bad is jet lag from the USA?
- Saudi Arabia is roughly 7 to 11 hours ahead of the continental United States, depending on your time zone and the time of year. Most people need a few days to adjust, which is why extra nights help.
One of the first decisions in planning Umrah is how long to stay. Seven and ten nights are the most common choices for pilgrims from the United States. Neither is right for everyone: the best length depends on your time off, your health, who is traveling with you and how you want to divide your time between Makkah and Madinah. This guide sets out sample itineraries and the factors that matter most.
What you need time for
- Travel days: flights from the United States are long, often with a connection, and you lose a day or more to travel each way
- Recovery: jet lag and fatigue are real, particularly for older travelers
- Umrah itself: the rites often take a few hours, but you need to be rested enough to perform them calmly
- Prayers in both mosques: for most pilgrims, this is the heart of the trip
- Moving between cities: by the Haramain train or by road, plus check-out and check-in
- Ziyarat: optional visits to historic sites in each city
Jet lag from the United States
Saudi Arabia is roughly 7 to 11 hours ahead of the continental United States, depending on where you live and whether daylight saving time is in effect. That means your body may want to sleep during the day and wake at night for the first few days.
- Try to sleep on the overnight flight and adjust to local time on arrival
- Many pilgrims rest at the hotel before starting Umrah, which is perfectly acceptable
- Short naps between prayers can help, but long daytime sleeps can prolong jet lag
- Drink plenty of water, especially in warm weather
With a 7-night trip, the adjustment takes up a larger share of your time. With 10 nights, you have more days at full strength.
Sample 7-night itineraries
Makkah first: 4 nights Makkah, 3 nights Madinah
- Fly from the U.S. to Jeddah, entering Ihram before the miqat during the flight
- Arrive, transfer to Makkah, rest and perform Umrah when ready
- Days in Makkah for prayers, rest and optional ziyarat
- Travel to Madinah by train or road
- Days in Madinah for prayers, a Rawdah visit if you obtain an appointment through Nusuk, and ziyarat
- Fly home from Madinah, or travel back to Jeddah for your flight
Madinah first: 3 nights Madinah, 4 nights Makkah
- Fly from the U.S. to Madinah, or to Jeddah and continue to Madinah; you do not enter Ihram on this flight
- Rest and recover in Madinah while praying in the Prophet’s Mosque
- Travel to Makkah, entering Ihram at or before the Madinah miqat (Dhul Hulayfah)
- Perform Umrah on arrival in Makkah, then spend your remaining days there
- Fly home from Jeddah
Madinah first is often gentler for families and older travelers, because the hardest physical part of the trip comes after you have recovered from the flight. See Ihram Explained for the miqat on each route.
Sample 10-night itineraries
Balanced: 5 nights Makkah, 5 nights Madinah
An even split gives you time to settle in each city, with room for rest days and ziyarat without rushing. It suits first-timers who want the full experience of both cities.
Makkah-focused: 6 or 7 nights Makkah, 3 or 4 nights Madinah
Some pilgrims prefer more time in Makkah for additional Tawaf and prayers in the Masjid al-Haram. This works well for those who have visited Madinah before.
Madinah-first, 10 nights
Starting with four or five nights in Madinah allows a full recovery before Umrah, then five or six nights in Makkah. Many families find this the most comfortable pace.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | 7 nights | 10 nights |
|---|---|---|
| Time off work needed | Less; fits a single week plus weekends | More; usually two working weeks |
| Recovery from jet lag | Takes a larger share of the trip | More days at full strength |
| Pace | Fuller days, less slack | Room for rest days and slower mornings |
| Ziyarat | A few key sites | More sites without rushing |
| Families and older travelers | Possible, but tiring | Usually more comfortable |
| Cost | Fewer hotel nights | More hotel nights; flight cost is usually similar |
| Flexibility if something goes wrong | Little buffer for delays or illness | More buffer |
Building in rest
Whatever length you choose, plan for rest. Pilgrims who try to spend every waking hour in the mosque often become exhausted or unwell midway through the trip. A good rhythm for many is to go to the mosque for each prayer, rest at the hotel in the afternoon, and save long sessions for the hours you feel strongest.
- Keep the first day after arrival light
- Avoid scheduling ziyarat on the same day as travel between cities
- Leave a quieter day before the flight home
- If traveling with children or elderly parents, plan for even more rest; see Umrah with Elderly Parents and Children
Travel days between the cities
Moving between Makkah and Madinah takes most of a day once you include check-out, transfers and check-in. The Haramain high-speed railway is usually the quickest option, while coaches and private cars take longer but go door to door. Luggage rules on the train are stricter, so check what is allowed before you pack; our packing guide can help.
Which should you choose?
- Choose 7 nights if your time off is limited, you are traveling as fit adults, or you have performed Umrah before and know what to expect
- Choose 10 nights if it is your first Umrah, you are traveling with family or older relatives, or you want time for rest and reflection
- Consider going longer if you can take the time and want an unhurried trip
