Thanksgiving and December Umrah from the USA
Thanksgiving week and the December school break are the easiest times for many U.S. families to perform Umrah together, with milder weather in Makkah and Madinah. They are also high-demand weeks, so book early and plan around the holiday dates your school and employer actually give you.

Quick answers
- When is Thanksgiving 2026?
- Thursday, November 26, 2026. Many schools close Wednesday to Friday, and some districts close the whole week of November 23.
- Is a Thanksgiving Umrah long enough?
- With the weekend either side and a few days of leave, a 7-night trip can fit. A school week off on its own is tight once you count two travel days.
- When is the December school break?
- Most U.S. districts break for about two weeks around Christmas and New Year, often from around December 19, 2026 to early January 2027. Check your own district’s calendar.
- Is December a good time for Umrah?
- For weather and family schedules, yes: Makkah and Madinah are much milder than in summer. It is busy and in demand, so book six months or more ahead.
For many American Muslim families, Thanksgiving week and the December break are the only times everyone is off school and work together. They are also when the weather in Makkah and Madinah is at its kindest. The result is high demand from the U.S., so these trips reward early planning and a clear sense of how many nights really fit.
Before you choose dates: as of October 21, 2026, the U.S. State Department rates Saudi Arabia Level 3, “Reconsider travel” (advisory issued October 12, 2026), and reports that commercial flights have at times been significantly disrupted. Read the current advisory before booking and before departure, enroll in STEP, and favor changeable fares and insurance that covers disruption and medical evacuation.
The 2026 holiday dates

| Thanksgiving | Thursday, November 26 | Schools often closed Wednesday to Friday; some the whole week of November 23 |
| Christmas Day | Friday, December 25 | Most districts break from around December 19 or 21 |
| New Year’s Day | Friday, January 1, 2027 | Schools usually return around January 4, 2027 |
Federal holiday dates are published by the Office of Personnel Management; school calendars vary, so check your district before you request quotes.
Thanksgiving: a short, focused trip
Thanksgiving gives most families four or five days, which is short for a journey from the U.S. Adding the weekend before and a couple of days of leave turns it into a workable seven nights.
Sample 7-night Thanksgiving trip
- Friday, November 20: overnight flight from New York or Washington
- Saturday, November 21: arrive in Jeddah, transfer to Makkah, rest
- Sunday to Tuesday: Umrah once rested, prayers in the Masjid al-Haram
- Wednesday, November 25: train to Madinah
- Thursday to Friday: prayers in the Prophet’s Mosque
- Saturday, November 28: fly home from Madinah, arriving Saturday or Sunday
From the Midwest or South, add a connection; from the West Coast, consider leaving a day earlier to absorb the longer journey and the 10 to 11 hour time difference.
December: room for ten nights
The December break is long enough for a ten-night trip without missing school, which is why it is one of the most popular times for Umrah from the United States. A Madinah-first plan works well for families: rest and prayer in Madinah, then Umrah in Makkah once everyone has adjusted.
Sample 10-night December trip
- Saturday, December 19: depart from Chicago, Houston or Los Angeles with one connection
- Sunday, December 20: arrive in Madinah or Jeddah; rest
- Four nights in Madinah: prayers, ziyarat and recovery
- Travel to Makkah in Ihram via the Madinah miqat, by car or train
- Six nights in Makkah: Umrah, prayers and rest days
- Wednesday, December 30 or after New Year: fly home from Jeddah with time to recover before school
What makes these weeks different
- Weather: milder days, cool evenings, especially in Madinah
- Crowds: busy, with many families from the U.S., U.K. and elsewhere on holiday
- Fares: higher, because general holiday travel overlaps
- Hotels: family rooms near the Haram are in demand; request them early
- Time: enough for a full trip in December, tight at Thanksgiving
Flying over the holidays
U.S. airports are at their busiest around Thanksgiving and Christmas, and the domestic leg of your journey can be the most stressful part. The Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are among the busiest travel days of the year, so departing a few days earlier, as in the sample above, also avoids the worst lines. From the Midwest, South and West, a connection on a crowded holiday weekend deserves extra margin; a single ticket from your home airport protects you if the first flight runs late. Winter weather can delay departures from Chicago, Detroit, Boston and New York, which is another reason to keep a spare night at the start or end of the trip.
Thanksgiving 2027 and next December
If 2026 is too soon, Thanksgiving 2027 falls on Thursday, November 25, 2027, and the next December break follows the same pattern around Christmas and New Year. These dates sit in the 1449 AH Umrah season, which the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announces separately; check its calendar before booking.
Dressing for a winter trip
Winter days in Makkah are pleasant, but evenings in Madinah can feel genuinely cool, and the air-conditioning in the mosques is strong. Light layers work better than a heavy coat: a fleece or light jacket for after Umrah, and warm socks for marble floors. Children feel the cold quickly in the courtyards after dark.
Holiday-trip checklist
- Confirm school and work dates before requesting quotes
- Request quotes six months or more ahead
- Check every child’s passport validity, at least six months beyond arrival
- Ask about family rooms or connecting rooms
- Leave one or two days at home before school or work restarts
- Pack warm layers for evenings

This guide is general planning information. Islamic dates depend on the sighting of the moon, school calendars vary by district, and official Umrah rules can change. Nothing here is a booking: flights, hotels and services are arranged on request, subject to availability, and confirmed only in your written quote.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to pull my children out of school?
Not if your dates fit the break. A December trip within the break is the usual way to avoid missed school days; a Thanksgiving trip often needs a day or two extra. Check your district’s absence policy.
Will it be cold in Madinah in December?
Evenings can feel cool, especially in Madinah, and mosques are air-conditioned. Pack a warm layer; see What to Pack for Umrah.
Are flights more expensive around Christmas?
Usually, because many travelers, not only pilgrims, fly then. Departing a few days before the busiest dates or returning after New Year can help.
Can we do Umrah over New Year’s Eve?
Yes. New Year has no religious significance in Makkah and Madinah, and the holy cities keep their normal rhythm. Flights around those dates are often busy.
Is a group trip available in December?
Group departures are published on our December and school-break page only when they are genuinely offered. If none is listed, ask about a private family trip.
Can I travel for Umrah during the December holidays?
Yes. Late December is one of the most popular windows for U.S. families because of school and work breaks, and the weather in Makkah is milder. It is also busy, so flights and hotels near the Haram fill early and cost more. Plan four to six months ahead. See December Umrah and Thanksgiving and December Umrah.
What is a winter-break Umrah package?
It is an Umrah trip timed to fit the U.S. winter school or work break, usually 7 to 10 nights across late December and early January. Because the window is short and fixed, the plan focuses on efficient flights, a rest day after arrival and hotels near the mosques so families can make the most of each day. We plan it as a custom itinerary for your exact break dates.
