Private vs Group Umrah: Which Is Right for You?
A group Umrah travels on set dates with other pilgrims and shared transfers, usually at a lower cost per person; a private Umrah is built around your own dates, hotels and pace. Here is how they compare and who each suits.

General guidance, not a religious ruling. Practice can differ between schools of thought; for your own circumstances, consult a qualified scholar.
Quick answers
- What is the difference between private and group Umrah?
- Group trips run on set dates with other pilgrims, shared transfers and a fixed itinerary. Private trips are planned around your party alone: your dates, hotels, transfers and pace.
- Is group Umrah cheaper?
- Usually per person, because transfers and some services are shared. Hotel choice and room sharing still drive most of the cost.
- Is group Umrah good for first-timers?
- Often, yes. A set program and the company of other pilgrims can make a first trip feel easier. A private trip with good preparation works well too.
- Can my masjid book its own private group?
- Yes. A community or family group can travel together on its own dates. See our guide to large group planning.
Every Umrah trip from the United States is either private, planned around your own party, or a group trip on set dates with other pilgrims. Neither is better in itself. The right choice depends on your experience, who you travel with, your budget and how much control you want over the days.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Group Umrah | Private Umrah |
|---|---|---|
| Dates | Set by the departure | Your choice, subject to availability |
| Flights | Usually from one named U.S. airport | From your nearest airport, routed for you |
| Hotels | Chosen for the group | Chosen with you, from shuttle hotels to Haram-view |
| Transfers | Shared coach | Private car or van |
| Pace | Group schedule | Your own, with rest when you need it |
| Guidance | Often a group leader or guide, once confirmed | Preparation from your specialist; a guide on request |
| Company | Other pilgrims, shared experience | Your own family or friends |
| Cost per person | Usually lower | Usually higher |
| Flexibility if plans change | Limited to the group’s terms | Easier to adjust |
Who group Umrah suits
- First-time pilgrims who value a set program
- Solo travelers who would like company
- Budget-conscious pilgrims, since shared transfers and services cost less
- Students and young adults traveling with friends
The trade-off is less choice: the departure date, airport, hotels and pace are set, and you move with the group.
Who private Umrah suits
- Families with young children or older parents who need rest and shorter walks
- Pilgrims who cannot fit a published departure date
- Travelers flying from airports with no group departure
- Anyone with health or mobility needs
- Experienced pilgrims who know how they like to spend their days
Examples
- A first-timer from Atlanta traveling alone: a group trip from a nearby gateway, if one is offered on suitable dates
- A family of six from Northern Virginia with grandparents: private, Madinah first, hotels within a short walk, private van between cities
- A couple from Seattle with fixed leave: private, because the dates matter more than the price difference
- A masjid community in Dearborn: a private group on its own dates; see Large Group Umrah Planning
A day on each kind of trip
On a group trip, the day often follows a shared plan: the group walks to the mosque together for some prayers, a coach leaves at a set time for ziyarat, and there may be talks or reminders in the hotel. You can still pray alone and rest, but transfers and visits run to the group’s timetable.
On a private trip, you decide each day. A family might pray Fajr in the Haram, sleep until late morning, perform an extra Tawaf after Isha when the mataf is calmer, and book a private car for ziyarat on the day the children feel best.
Where the cost difference comes from
- Transfers: a coach seat is shared; a private car is for your party alone
- Guide or group leader: shared across the group, or added for your family only
- Hotels: groups often use rooms secured for the departure; private trips book what suits you
- Flights: groups usually fly together from one airport on set dates; private trips are routed for you
Hotel choice and room sharing usually move the price more than the style itself. A private trip in a shuttle hotel can cost less than a group trip beside the Haram.
Questions to ask yourself
- Would I rather have company and structure, or quiet and control?
- Do the published group dates fit my leave and my family?
- Does anyone in my party need a slower pace or a closer hotel?
- Is my nearest airport served by a group departure?
Booking timelines
Group trips open for booking when a departure is published and may close once the group is full or a set date passes; places on popular holiday departures go early. Private trips can be quoted at any time, but the best hotels and flights for holiday weeks still go early, so request a quote six months or more ahead for Ramadan, Thanksgiving, December and spring break, and three to four months ahead at quieter times.
The middle ground
The line is not always sharp. Families sometimes travel privately but join a guided ziyarat. Groups of friends book a private trip together and share costs. A custom trip can add a stopover or extra nights. If neither label fits, describe what you want and we will design it; see custom Umrah.
Questions to ask either way
- Which hotels, exactly, and how is each reached: walk or shuttle?
- Which transfers are included, and of which type?
- For groups: how many travelers, who leads, and what if the minimum is not reached?
- For private trips: which parts can be changed after booking, and at what cost?
- What happens if flights are disrupted?
More questions are in Questions to Ask an Umrah Agency. For dates, see Thanksgiving and December Umrah, and for building in room to adapt, see Planning a Flexible Umrah Itinerary. Our guide to choosing your Umrah season and travel style puts it all together.
This guide is general planning information. Islamic dates depend on the sighting of the moon, school calendars vary by district, and official Umrah rules can change. Nothing here is a booking: flights, hotels and services are arranged on request, subject to availability, and confirmed only in your written quote.
Browse group packages (shown only when departures are genuinely offered) or private packages, or request a personalized quote and tell us how you prefer to travel. Everything is arranged on request, subject to availability.
Frequently asked questions
Will a group trip have a scholar or guide?
Some do. A group leader or guide is named on a group package only once confirmed. Ask who it is, what role they play and whether guidance is in English.
Can I join a group but stay in a better hotel?
Sometimes, depending on the package and availability. Staying elsewhere can complicate shared transfers, so ask before booking.
Do private trips include guided ziyarat?
They can, as an option. Your quote lists whether ziyarat and any guide are included or excluded.
What if a group departure is cancelled?
The package terms say what happens if a minimum number is not reached or a departure is changed. Read them before paying, and see When Umrah Plans Change.
Can a solo woman join a group?
Often, yes. Rules for women traveling without a mahram are set by the authorities and can differ by visa type and season, and scholars differ on the religious question; see Umrah for Women from the USA.
Can I request a custom Umrah package?
Yes. Most of our work is custom: you tell us your dates, departure airport, who is traveling and what matters most, and we build the itinerary around that rather than fitting you into a fixed departure. You can shape the order of cities, the nights in each, the hotel standard, room types and transfers. See private and custom Umrah for what you can choose.
Are private transfers available?
Yes. Private transfers carry only your party in a car, van or larger vehicle and leave when you are ready, which helps with children, elderly travelers and late arrivals. Shared transfers cost less but may wait for other passengers. Each quote states which kind is included; private transfers can be added on request.
