Quick answers

What is a land-only Umrah package?
A land-only package covers arrangements in Saudi Arabia, typically hotels, ground transfers and sometimes visa processing and guidance, while you book your own international flights.
What is an air-and-land package?
An air-and-land (air-inclusive) package adds international flights from the United States to the land arrangements, so your flights, hotels and transfers are booked and coordinated together.
Which is cheaper?
It depends. Booking your own flights can save money if you find a good fare or use airline miles, but a combined package can be simpler and easier to change. Compare itemized quotes rather than headline totals.
What should I check when comparing Umrah quotes?
Compare the airline and route, baggage allowance, hotel names and room occupancy, transfers, whether the Haramain train is included, visa handling, taxes and fees, and the cancellation and change terms.

When you start comparing Umrah packages, you will see two broad types: land-only and air-and-land. They can look similar on the surface, yet cover quite different things. Understanding the difference helps you compare quotes fairly and avoid surprises after you book.

What a land-only package usually means

A land-only package covers your arrangements once you arrive in Saudi Arabia. You book and pay for your international flights separately. Land packages commonly include some or all of:

  • Hotels in Makkah and Madinah
  • Transfers between the airport, hotels and cities
  • Travel between Makkah and Madinah by road or train
  • Visa processing or guidance
  • Ziyarat tours and on-the-ground guidance

Exactly what is included varies, so always read the inclusions list rather than assuming.

Who land-only suits

  • Travelers who want to use airline miles or a specific airline
  • Those flying from a city where they have found a good fare themselves
  • Pilgrims combining Umrah with travel to another country
  • Experienced travelers comfortable managing flight changes

What an air-and-land package usually means

An air-and-land package, sometimes called air-inclusive, adds round-trip international flights to the land arrangements. Your flights, hotels and transfers are booked together, so arrival and departure times line up with check-in, check-out and transfers.

Who air-and-land suits

  • First-time pilgrims who want one point of contact for the whole trip
  • Families and groups who want to travel on the same flights
  • Those who prefer not to coordinate flight times with hotel and transfer bookings

If you are new to the process, our guide Your First Umrah from the USA walks through flights, documents and timing.

What to check when comparing quotes

Two quotes with similar totals can include very different things. Ask each provider to itemize, then check the following.

Flights (for air-and-land packages)

  • Airline and route: nonstop or connecting, connection city and layover length
  • Arrival and departure airports: Jeddah or Madinah, which affects your itinerary and where you enter Ihram
  • Baggage allowance: checked and carry-on, including for Zamzam water, which airlines handle under their own rules
  • Ticket conditions: whether dates can be changed and at what cost

Hotels

  • The named hotels, not just a star rating or “near the Haram”
  • Room occupancy: quad, triple or double, since quotes are usually per person based on how many share a room
  • Meals: room only, breakfast or more
  • Number of nights in each city

See Choosing a Makkah Hotel and Hotel Proximity Explained for what to ask about location.

Ground transport

  • Airport transfers: included at both ends, and whether shared or private
  • Between the cities: coach, private car or the Haramain high-speed train
  • If the train is included, check the class of travel, the luggage rules and whether transfers to and from the stations are covered, since the stations are not beside the mosques

Visa, taxes and fees

  • Whether visa processing is included or you apply yourself through the Saudi eVisa portal
  • Whether taxes and fees, including any hotel or municipal charges, are in the total
  • Whether any insurance is included, and what it covers

Visa rules and charges change, so check the official source before you travel.

Terms

  • Deposit and payment schedule
  • Cancellation and change policies for each part of the trip
  • What happens if a hotel is substituted

Common pitfalls when comparing

  • Comparing different occupancies: a quad-room price per person will always look lower than a double-room price. Compare like with like.
  • Comparing a land-only quote with an air-and-land quote directly: add a realistic flight cost for your dates and departure city to the land-only total first, including baggage fees if your fare does not include checked bags.
  • Overlooking the nights: one package may include an extra night in a city, or count the night of arrival differently. Check the check-in and check-out dates in each city.
  • Ignoring arrival times: a flight that lands late at night may mean an extra hotel night, or a long wait for check-in if it lands early in the morning.
  • Assuming “transfers included” covers everything: confirm whether it includes the airport at both ends, travel between the cities and any train station transfers.
  • Overlooking the route: whether you arrive in Jeddah or Madinah changes where you enter Ihram and the order of your trip. See 7 vs 10 Nights for sample itineraries.

A slightly higher quote that names its hotels, flights and transport clearly is often better value than a lower one that leaves those details vague.

A note on booking your own flights

If you book flights yourself with a land-only package, wait until the land arrangements are confirmed, and share your flight details with your provider so transfers can be arranged. Leave a comfortable margin between your arrival and your first hotel night. Our packing guide covers what to carry on board, and the TSA site has current U.S. airport screening rules.
