Quick answers

What affects Umrah package prices most?
Season and the Makkah hotel. Holiday and Ramadan dates cost more, and hotels facing the Haram cost far more than shuttle hotels. Room sharing and flights come next.
How much does the season change the price?
A lot. In the packages we reviewed in October 2026, late-December departures ran about $500 to $800 per person above Thanksgiving for the same hotels, in quad rooms.
Which price factors can I control?
Your dates, room sharing, hotel tier, trip length, departure airport and whether you book flights yourself. Official fees and exchange rates are outside your control.

Eight factors decide almost every Umrah price from the United States: season, Makkah hotel proximity, room sharing, flights, trip length, ground transport, inclusions and payment terms. The first three usually matter most. Below, each one is explained with rounded ranges from publicly advertised packages in October 2026, so you can see how much each moves the total.

1. Season

Demand sets the price. Rounded ranges for 7–10 night packages with flights from U.S. gateways, quad room, per person:

Travel periodAdvertised range
Thanksgiving week 2026About $2,300 to $3,500
Winter break and New YearAbout $3,000 to $3,800
Early Ramadan 2027About $3,000 to $3,350
Spring break and summer 2027About $3,000 to $3,300

For the same hotels, late-December departures ran about $500 to $800 per person above Thanksgiving.

These ranges summarize publicly advertised 7–10 night Umrah packages from U.S. gateways that we reviewed in October 2026, rounded. They are not Safa Rihla prices or offers. Advertised prices change often, may already be sold out, and each package defines its inclusions differently.

Ramadan is priced in layers: early-Ramadan departures can cost less than the winter break, while the last ten nights are usually the most expensive dates of the year. See December and school-break packages and Ramadan packages.

2. Makkah hotel proximity

Hotels at the edge of the Haram’s courtyards, in the Clock Tower complex or the front of Jabal Omar, cost the most. Shuttle hotels farther out cost less. For example, Hilton Suites Jabal Omar is described by Hilton as across the street from the King Fahd and King Abdullah gates, while voco Makkah is about 1.5 km away and reached by shuttle via Kudai Parking, according to IHG. Madinah prices usually vary less, because most Central Area hotels are a short walk from the mosque.

3. Room sharing

Prices are per person and assume a room is shared. In the packages we reviewed in October 2026, a double cost about $250 to $630 more per person than a quad, typically around $400. Read Umrah room sharing explained for what each option looks like.

4. Flights

  • Nonstop vs connecting: nonstop flights from New York or Washington save time and fatigue and often cost more. Connecting via Istanbul, Doha, Bahrain or another hub can be cheaper.
  • Departure city: large hubs offer more airlines and competition; smaller cities add a domestic leg.
  • Arrival airport: flying into Madinah and out of Jeddah, or the reverse, avoids backtracking between the cities.
  • Baggage: fares differ in checked-bag allowances, which matters on the return with Zamzam and gifts.

If you hold miles or have found a good fare, a land-only package may cost less overall. See land-only vs air-and-land.

5. Trip length and the Makkah–Madinah split

Each extra night adds hotel cost while the airfare stays about the same, so the per-night cost of a longer trip falls. Because Makkah hotels near the Haram usually cost more than comparable Madinah hotels, shifting a night from Makkah to Madinah can lower the total slightly. Our guide 7 vs 10 nights compares splits.

6. Ground transport

Packages move you between the airport, hotels and cities by shared coach, private car or the Haramain high-speed train. The train is fast, but fares vary by class and date (check the official ticketing site), and you still need transfers to and from the stations. Private cars cost the most but go door to door, which can matter with elderly parents.

7. Inclusions

Two packages at similar prices can include very different things. Among the packages we reviewed, most included breakfast only, while a few added dinner, health insurance, guided ziyarat or headsets. Check each of these: visa, meals, transfers at both ends, intercity transport, ziyarat, guidance, insurance and taxes.

8. Payment terms and flexibility

Flexible terms cost money. A package that allows date changes or partial refunds often carries a higher price than one paid in full upfront with no refunds. Ask what you are paying for. See deposits, cancellations and refunds.

Putting the factors together

Here is how the same family of four could end up at very different totals for one Umrah, before any extras:

ChoiceLower-cost optionHigher-cost option
DatesA quiet month such as late October or JanuaryWinter break or the last ten nights of Ramadan
Makkah hotelShuttle hotelClock Tower or the front of Jabal Omar
RoomingOne quadTwo doubles
FlightsConnectingNonstop
Between the citiesShared coachTrain plus private transfers, or a private car
MealsBreakfast onlyBreakfast and dinner

In the packages we reviewed, late-December departures ran about $500 to $800 per person above Thanksgiving for the same hotels, and a double added about $250 to $630 per person over a quad. For a family of four, those two decisions together can be worth several thousand dollars, before hotel tier and flights are considered.

Signs a low price may not be what it seems

  • Hotels named “or similar”, with no minimum standard or distance
  • No room basis stated, so the price may be a quad or a shared bed
  • A “starting at” price with no dates attached
  • Flights “subject to availability” with no airline or routing
  • Visa, transfers or the intercity journey listed as extras
  • Payment terms that are only explained after you pay

What you cannot control

  • Visa fees and rules set by Saudi authorities, which can change between seasons; check the official eVisa portal
  • Airline fuel surcharges and schedule changes
  • Hotel rate changes on high-demand dates

Where to save without regret

  • Travel outside school breaks if you can
  • Share a room with family you are comfortable with
  • Spend on Makkah proximity, and choose a simpler hotel in Madinah
  • Accept a well-timed connection instead of a nonstop flight
  • Keep good insurance; it is not the place to cut

Frequently asked questions

Does booking early make Umrah cheaper?

Often, for peak dates. Early booking gives more choice of flights and of hotels near the Haram, which are the first to fill at Thanksgiving, the winter break and in Ramadan. For quiet months the difference is usually smaller.

Is flying from a smaller U.S. city more expensive?

Usually a little, because you add a domestic connection. Sometimes a fare from a hub such as New York, Chicago or Washington plus a separate domestic ticket is cheaper, but separate tickets carry more risk if a connection is missed.

Why did my quote change a week later?

Airfares and hotel rates are priced by date and demand and can change daily until you book. That is why quotes carry an issue date and a validity period.

Does the exchange rate matter?

Less than you might think. The Saudi riyal is pegged to the U.S. dollar, so hotel costs do not swing with exchange rates the way they would in many countries. Supplier pricing and demand matter far more.

What changes the cost of an Umrah package?

Five things move the total most: your travel dates, the hotels’ distance from the mosques, how many people share each room, the flights (airline, route and how early you book) and the number of nights. Smaller items include private versus shared transfers, the train, meals and guided ziyarat. Our guide to what affects Umrah package prices shows how each one shifts the price.
