Hotels in Makkah and Madinah

Choosing Hotels in Makkah and Madinah for Umrah: The Complete Guide

Choose your Umrah hotels by the real route to the mosque, not the star rating. In Makkah, distance and hills matter most; in Madinah, which side of the mosque and room comfort matter more. How to compare walking, shuttle, elevators, rooms and accessibility.

Quick answers

Should I spend more on the Makkah or the Madinah hotel?
For most pilgrims, Makkah. You return to the Haram often, the area is hilly and the rites themselves involve a lot of walking. Most Central Area hotels in Madinah are already a short, level walk.
How do I judge a hotel’s distance to the Haram?
Ask for the route from the hotel’s exit to a named gate, what it involves (slopes, tunnels, crossings) and how it changes at prayer times. A straight-line distance in meters says little.
Are shuttle hotels a bad idea?
Not necessarily. They cost less and often have bigger rooms, but you depend on the shuttle schedule and traffic. They suit fit travelers better than elderly parents or families with small children.
Do star ratings tell me how close a hotel is?
No. Stars describe facilities and service. A 5-star hotel can be a shuttle ride away, and a 4-star hotel can be a short walk.

Choose your Umrah hotels by the real route to the mosque and who has to walk it, then by rooms and price. In Makkah, distance, slopes and prayer-time crowds decide how often you can pray in the Haram, so it usually deserves most of your hotel budget. In Madinah, most Central Area hotels are a short, level walk from the Prophet’s Mosque, so the side of the mosque, room comfort and breakfast weigh more.

Our city guides go deeper: choosing a Makkah hotel and choosing a Madinah hotel.

Walking, shuttle or something in between

Hotels fall into rough bands. The hotel examples below are described as their brands describe them:

We do not quote walking times unless the hotel itself publishes one, because the same route can take far longer before Friday prayer or on a Ramadan night than at mid-morning. Read Makkah shuttle hotels explained before choosing one, and see how we describe distance in our listings.

What a distance claim leaves out

  • Which exit and which gate. Large complexes have several exits, and the mosque has many gates. Some entrances and levels are closed or managed by security when areas fill.
  • Elevators. In tall towers, hundreds of guests leave in the half hour before each prayer. The wait can rival the walk. A lower floor helps.
  • Crowds. Plazas fill before prayers; the same 300 meters can take much longer at Jumuah.
  • Heat. A short walk at midday in a warm month is harder than it sounds.

Rooms

Package prices are per person by occupancy: quad, triple or double. Triples and quads are often standard rooms with extra beds. Families may need suites or connecting rooms, which are limited. See hotel rooms for families and groups, and for prices, room sharing explained.

Stars and brands

Star labels tell you about facilities, not distance, and brand listings sometimes disagree. Accor, for example, shows both 4 and 5 stars for some of its Makkah hotels. Read what hotel star ratings mean for Umrah.

Accessibility

If anyone in your group uses a wheelchair or tires easily, put the shortest, most level route first. Some hotels publish useful details: IHG lists ADA-compliant elevators, a drop-off point beside the entrance and flat terrain between parking and entrance at InterContinental Dar Al Iman in Madinah, and Accor describes a hotel shuttle toward the Ladies’ Gate at Pullman Zamzam Madina. Most hotels publish far less. Our guide to hotels for elderly pilgrims lists what to ask.

Shortlisting hotels in five steps

  1. List who is traveling and how far each person can walk, several times a day, in heat.
  2. Choose your Makkah band: facing the courtyards, a short walk, or shuttle-served.
  3. Choose your Madinah side according to the entrances your family will use.
  4. Set your rooming: quads, doubles, suites or connecting rooms.
  5. Compare two or three named hotels per city on route, rooms, meals and accessibility, and ask what the hotel has not confirmed.

Splitting your budget between the cities

Spend where you will walk most. For most pilgrims that means a closer hotel in Makkah and a comfortable mid-range Central Area hotel in Madinah. A fit couple on a tight budget might do the reverse for a calm Madinah stay, accepting a shuttle in Makkah. See how hotel choice changes the total in how much Umrah costs from the USA and economy vs premium vs luxury.

Check-in and check-out

Large hotels in Makkah and Madinah commonly list check-in at 4 pm and check-out at noon. After an overnight flight from the United States, that can mean hours waiting. Ask about early check-in, luggage storage and a place to rest or change, or book the room from the night before if arriving early matters to your group.

Five questions for any hotel

  1. What is the route from the hotel’s exit to a named gate, and what does it involve?
  2. Is it a walk or a shuttle, and how does that change at prayer times and in peak season?
  3. How many elevators serve guest floors, and which floor will we be on?
  4. What exactly are the beds in our room type?
  5. Which meals are included in our rate?

Hotel details here are summarized from each hotel’s official pages, reviewed in October 2026, and are attributed to the hotel. Facilities, shuttles and access routes change, and listing a hotel does not mean we hold rooms there. Confirm anything that matters to you in writing before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in one city longer?

Many pilgrims spend slightly more nights in Makkah, where the Umrah rites are, and three to five in Madinah. Our guide 7 vs 10 nights compares common splits.

Can you guarantee a Haram or Kaaba view?

Views depend on the room category and floor, and only the hotel can confirm them. We name the room category in your quote and say clearly when a view is requested rather than confirmed.

What does “or similar” mean on a package?

That the operator may substitute another hotel. Ask what standard and distance a substitute must meet, and whether you can decline it.

Do hotels near the Haram cost more in Ramadan and school breaks?

Yes, usually much more, and they fill first. If proximity matters to your group, ask for options early; see what affects Umrah package prices.

Can I switch hotels partway through my stay?

Yes, and some families do: a closer hotel for the days around Umrah itself, then a less expensive one. Each move costs time with luggage, so weigh it against the savings.

Are Makkah hotels near the Haram?

Some are right beside it and many are not. Hotels in the Clock Tower complex and around the mosque courtyards are a few minutes’ walk, others are 10 to 20 minutes away, and hotels farther out rely on a shuttle. We describe each hotel’s access in plain terms, from what the hotel itself publishes, and flag what we could not confirm. Read hotel proximity explained.

Can I request hotels that are not on your website?

Yes. Our hotel profiles cover a selection of hotels we have researched, not every option, so you can name any hotel in Makkah or Madinah and we will check availability and price. Listing a hotel on our site does not imply a partnership or reserved rooms, and an unlisted hotel is not necessarily a worse choice. Browse our hotel profiles for comparison.
